Alex was born in 1879 in Leslie, Fife, Scotland.  Alex's father was Thomas Martin and his mother was Jane  Haldane Porteous.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander Porteous and Agnes Walker. He had two brothers named Thomas and Jasper.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
