Iain's father was Angus Og Macdonald and his mother was Agnes O Cahan. His paternal grandparents were Angus Mor MacDonald and Nic Collin Campbell; his maternal grandparents were Guy O Cathan and Unknown. He had a sister named Mary. He was the younger of the two children. He died at the age of 61 in 1387 in Ardtornish Castle, Morven, Scotland.
