Frank Allen was born in June 1897 in East Retford, Notts.  Frank Allen's father was Thomas Henry and his mother was Rose Emily Bowdler.  His paternal grandparents were Frederick Masters Henry and Eliza Cradock; his maternal grandparents were Thomas  Bowdler and Unknown. He had two brothers and a sister, named Cyril, Thomas Cradock and Nora Viola Myfanwy.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
