Richard was born on April 15th, 1856 in Bagillt, Holywell, Flintshire, Wales. Richard's father was Edward Gratton and his mother was Jane Davies.  His paternal grandparents were John Gratton and Jane Price; his maternal grandparents were William Davies and Unknown. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, William D, Edward Ethell, Robert  Arthur, Mary Jane  and Ann Grace.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died  due to Died of Carcinoma aged 52 in Royal Infirmary, UD, Liverpool at the age of 52 in 1908 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England.
