John was born in Fahan, Donegal, Ireland. John's father was William Glenn and his mother was Mary White. His paternal grandparents were William Glenn and Unknown; his maternal grandparents were John White and Unknown. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Thomas Alexander, John, Margaret, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Fanny and Sarah.
