Joseph was born on March 19th, 1797 in Old Warden, Bedfordshire, England. Joseph's father was Daniel Dickins and his mother was Mary Dear. His paternal grandparents were William Dickins and Anne Wilby. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Peter, Daniel, John, David, Lucy, Charlotte and Fanny. He was the second youngest of the eight children.-
