Edith Florence's father was Theophilus Hughes Clarke and her mother was Arabella Clarke. Her paternal grandparents were George Somers Clarke and Elizabeth Jack; her maternal grandparents were Somers Clarke and Sarah Blaker. She had a brother and three sisters, named Charles Stanley, Ethel Maud, Effie Ella and Evelyn Kathleen H. She was the second oldest of the five children.
