William was born in November 1814 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.  William's father was Job Chancellor and his mother was Elizabeth Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Unknown and Ann Chancellor; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Smith and Sarah James. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John Henry, Mark, James, Job, Harriett and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 61 in March 1876 in South Stoke, Somerset, England.  He was buried on March 14th, 1876 in South Stoke, Somerset, England.
