William was born about 1871 in Cripplegate, Middlesex. William's father was William Buxton and his mother was Sarah Jane Davies. His paternal grandparents were John Buxton and Mary Bottomley . He had a brother and a sister, named Charles and Annie. He was the second oldest of the three children.-
