George was born about 1835 in North Perrott, Somerset, England. George's father was William Bishop and his mother was Ann Unknown.  His paternal grandparents were Unknown Bishop and Susanna Unknown. He had four sisters named Sarah, Elizabeth, Hannah and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
