Elizabeth was born in 1862 in Kinross, Kinrosshire, Scotland. Elizabeth's father was Robert Barclay and her mother was Anne Jane Ogilvie Simpson. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Barclay and Agnes Rutherford; her maternal grandparents were Charles Simpson and Elizabeth Anderson. She had five brothers named Robert, Agnes, Patrick, Andrew Doig and John. She was the second oldest of the six children.-
