Josiah's father was Thomas Adams and his mother was Frances (Fanny) Musgrave . His paternal grandparents were Joseph Adams and Mary Pester. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Alfred, Daniel, Frederick Thomas, Vashti and Jane. He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Frederick and Jane.
