Thomas was born in 1817 in Middleton, Teesdale, Co Durham and his baptism took place there on August 31st, 1817.¹ Thomas' father was John Raine and his mother was Mary Bainbridge. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Raine and Margaret Gibson. He had a brother and five sisters, named William, Margaret, Mary, Mary, Mary and Ann. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
