Sarah was born on September 18th, 1848 in Plane Street (no 11), Leeds, Yorkshire.1 Sarah's father was William Gale and her mother was Elizabeth Jordan. Her paternal grandparents were William Gale and Elizabeth Stead; her maternal grandparents were Dennis Jordan and Harriet Oxley. She had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Elizabeth, Ellen and Hannah. She was the oldest of the five children.
