Herbert was born on July 24th, 1916.  Herbert's father was David Swan Donaldson and his mother was Jessica Fowler Budd.  His paternal grandparents were David Donaldson and Jean Swan. He had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Harold, Leslie, Peter, Alfred, Albert, Mabel, Jessie and Jean. He had four half-brothers named William, David, William and Tom.  He died at the age of 38 in 1954.
