Диомид was born on August 16th, 1878.  Диомид's father was Ефрем Иоакимов Таранец and his mother was Мария Кассианова Отрощенко (Таранец).  His paternal grandfather is Иаким Иванов and his paternal grandmother was Анна Яковлева (Таранец); his maternal grandparents were Кассиан Евфимов Отрощенко and Ольга Герасимова (Отрощенко). He had two brothers and four sisters, named Самуил, Тихон, Анна, Евгения, Елисавета and Матрона.  He is the second oldest of the seven children.
