John (Jack) Dempsey Woods 
John, known as Jack, was born on April 28th, 1879 in Kilrea Co Derry Ireland. Jack's father was Thomas Woods and his mother was Margaret (Maria) Maria Bolton. His maternal grandparents were Sloan Bolton and Mary Anne McIlwrath. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Sloan, David, Bob, Tom, Sam, Tilly, Annie, Jeannie and Mima. He was the third oldest of the ten children.General Notes
Around 1900 John Dempsey Woods (aged approx. 22 years), his brother Sloan Bolton Woods and a cousin, John Kelso, came to NZ to “get the lay of the land” and report back to Thomas Woods, sr, in Ireland. On John Dempsey's say so, Thomas caught the next boat out leaving Maria to sell up, pack, gather the kids and set sail as soon after him as possible. They did not return to Ireland although some of their children and other descendants have since visited.
