Joseph Yielding

Joseph was born on August 17th, 1804 in Rutherford, North Carolina, USA.

  "Seventy-one-year-old Joseph Yeilding had already had an illustrious career as a pioneer-educator in North Alabama and the military when he bought a 1080-acre farm seven miles northeast of Hanceville in 1875. The son of an Englishman, Richard Yeilding, Joeph was born in North Carolina in 1804. As a young man, he fought in several Indian campaigns and later the Mexican War which broke out in 1845 following Texas' admittance to the union. In between times, he settled in Cotaco Valley in Morgan County, Alabama and taught school in Morgan, Blount and Madison Counties. Although nearly sixty years old when the Civil War broke out, he volunteered for service in the Confederacy and served in Gen. Joe Wheeler's cavalry. Joseph Yeilding's first wife was Mary McCutcheon. They had four children. His second wife was Chasey M. Barlett. To this marriage were also born four children: John, Nancy (Glasscock), William M. (a school teacher in Cullman County until his untimely death) and Bethany (Turner). Joseph's grandaughter, Mrs. Ezma G. Bice, recalls hearing her mother say that when Joseph first came to Cotaco Vally he had to travel all the way to Huntsville to sell butter and buy staples. He traveled by horseback, camping out one night each way. He often encountered Indians along the Tennessee River. Joseph Yeilding was active in the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church and donated the property for the Duck River Cemetery. He died in 1883 at the age of 79 and is buried at Duck River Baptist Church Cemetery in Walter, Cullman Co., Alabama."

Joseph's father was Richard (Richard) J. Yielding and his mother was Millicent (Milly) Mills. His paternal grandfather was Yielding and his paternal grandmother is ?; his maternal grandparents were William Mills and Eleanor (Nelly) Morris. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Francis, Richard, John, Taylor, Devinea, Elizabeth, Litia, Dorcaus and Rachel. He had a half-sister named Mary. He died at the age of 78 on August 16th, 1883 in Blount County, Alabama, USA.
