Alf was born in 1735 in Maal (Mål), Sokndal, Rogaland, Norway. Alf's father was Ole Staalesen Setre and his mother was Magle Staalesdtr Brikland. His paternal grandparents were Staale Svensen Espelund and Birgitte; his maternal grandfather was Staale Olsen and his maternal grandmother is <Unknown>. He died at the age of 129 in 1864 in Åvedal, Lund.
