Allan was born in 1832 in 42/43 South Dell, Barvas, Ross-shire, Scotland.  Allan's father was Alexander Murray and his mother was Christian Graham.  His paternal grandparents were Murdo Murray and Margaret Martin. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Allan, Murdo, Donald, Janet, Mary, Catherine, Mary and Margaret.
