Margaret was born in 1813 in Melbost, Stornoway, Ross-shire, Scotland.1   Margaret's father was Angus McKay and her mother was Rachael McAskill.  Her maternal grandparents were Donald MacAskill and Christina. She had a sister named Mary.  She was the younger of the two daughters.
