John was born in 1817 in Edinburgh, Scotland.  John's father was Robert James Gibson and his mother was Margaret Murdoch.  His paternal grandparents were Alexander Gibson and Isobel Cockburn. He had a sister named Helen.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 63 on March 14th, 1880.
