Custance's father was SAMUEL Winstead IV and his mother was Elizabeth Cottance. His paternal grandparents were SAMUEL Winstead III and ELIZABETH Jones. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Mandley, John, Susannah, Ailcy Yancy and Elizabeth Davey. He had three half-sisters named ELIZABETH, Frances Jane and Charlotte.
