John was born in 1697 in Yeocomico, Westmoreland, Virginia, United States. John's father was Peter Smith Jr. and his mother was Elizabeth Little. His paternal grandparents were Peter Smith Sr. and Jane Barnes. He had a brother named William. He was the younger of the two children. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named James, Thomas, Peter II, Cpt Thomas, Anne, Abigail Fleming and Martha. He died at the age of 41 in 1738.-
