Thomas Martin was a big gambler with his brothers-in-law James Meredith Federick Ludwick Ashwell and Benjamin C. Ellis, Jr. When he lost a bet they filed with Bedford County Courthouse.
All the possessions of Thomas Martin and wife, Emmaline Ellis were sold off in 1844.
