William was born about 1070 in Glentham & Caenby, Lincolnshire, England.1   William's father was Ralph de Chesney and his mother was Maude de Waterville.  His paternal grandparents were Walter de Caen and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were William de Waterville and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and a sister, named Ralph, Roger, Philip and Sibyl.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
