Matthew was born about 1738 in Bedford Co., Virginia.1   Matthew's father was Edward Pate and his mother was Martha Tinsley.  His paternal grandparents were John Pate and Judith Christian; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Tinsley and Martha Ragland. He had four brothers and a sister, named Anthony, Jeremiah, John, Thomas and Judith.  He was the oldest of the six children.
