Ludwig was born in 0939 in Moselle, Lorraine, France.1   Ludwig's father was Duke of Lorraine Gislebert de Hainault and his mother was Gerberga of Saxony.  His paternal grandparents were Count Regnier de Hainault II and Adelaide of Autun; his maternal grandparents were Holy Roman Emperor Henry (The Fowler) of Germany I and Saint Matilda Of Ringleheim. He had a brother and four sisters, named Henri, Alberade, Gerberga, Wiltrudede and Adelaide.  He was the third youngest of the six children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Lothaire, Charles, Carloman, Louis, Henri, Matilda, Hildegarde, Raingarde and Alberade.  He died at the age of 41 in 0980 in Dagsburg, Moselle, Lorraine, France.1
