!Source: Our Kin Of Bedford Co. The Ragland family are natives of Wales and
descend from Evan Herbert who was a blood relative of Wm. the Conqueror.
Herbert came over to Wales with that monarch from Normandy. The family of
Herbert intermarried with the family of Beauforts, who descend from John of
Gaunt and Catherine Swineford and came into the possession, through the
Beauforts, of Ragland Castle in Wales. Thense were colled Raglans and
subsequently Raglands. John Ragland, the first of his kin to come to America,
married his kinswoman, Anne Beaufort, and came to Virginia about the year 1720.
They settled on Mechamps Creek near the mouth of the Chickahomony River. He
obtained grants for 15000 acres of land in Hanover and Louisa Co. and imported
slaves directly from Africa. His county seat was known as Ripping Hall and
remained in the Ragland family until 1823 when it was destroyed by fire. He had
9 children.
