Gepa was born in 1130 in Dassel, Hannover, Prussia.1   Gepa's father was Count Reinald of Dassel and her mother was Countess Mathilde of Schauenburg.  Her paternal grandparents were Dietrich von Dassel and Kunihild. She had two brothers named Ludolf and Reinald.  She was the youngest of the three children.
