James was born in 1305 in Carrickfergus Castle, Antrim, Ireland.1 James' father was Earl Edmund le Boteler and his mother was Joan de Windsor. His maternal grandparents were Earl John FitzThomas FitzGerald and Blanche de la Roche. He was an only child. He died in Gowran, Kilkenny, Ireland.2 General Notes
