When Robert Stewart Duke of Albany died at the age of about eighty-one, his son Murdock Stewart succeeded him as Governor of Scotland. His attempt at governing foundered after four years of futile misrule. In 1424 King James I, his cousin, returned to Scotland after eighteen years of imprisonment in England. Since James I's kingship had been at risk while imprisoned in England, he did not intend for it to be threatened upon his return to Scotland. In 1425 he ordered Murdock & his two sons beheaded at Sterling.[murdock stuart.ged] When Robert Stewart Duke of Albany died at the age of about eighty-one, his son Murdock Stewart succeeded him as Governor of Scotland. Walter de Haliburton, 1st Lord Haliburton of Dirleton From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sir Walter de Haliburton, 1st Lord Haliburton of Dirleton was Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. The grandson of Sir John Haliburton of Dirleton, East Lothian (d. 1392), by his spouse Margaret, daughter of Sir John Cameron, Sir Walter was one of the hostages for King James I on March 28, 1424 and was exchanged and permitted to return to Scotland on July 16, 1425. He is named as one of the Scottish Commissioners to meet the English at Hawdenstank with 800 men to redress complaints, in a Safe-Conduct dated January 24, 1430 (1429/30). In 1439 and 1440 he was appointed Lord High Treasurer of Scotland, and in the latter year was created a Lord of Parliament. He remained Lord High Treasurer until 1449, a post which he could not hold unless he was also a Privy Councillor. He married Isobel, daughter of the Regent, Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, widow of Alexander Leslie, Earl of Ross (d. 1402), and they had four sons: John Haliburton, 2nd Lord Haliburton of Dirleton Walter Haliburton, who married Catherine, daughter & co-heiress of Alexander de Chisholm.
