By permission, the text below is excerpts from a book, The Colemans of North Hamilton County Tennessee by Cy Yarborough. Editor's notes are my additions based on reports people have given me or I have researched - Wes Coleman Benjamin Franklin Coleman was the third and youngest son of Charles Coleman. He was born 8/24/1818, in Madison County, Alabama. An old family legend that has been handed down for generations alleges that the Coleman's came to this country (Southeast Tennessee) by floating down the Tennessee River on a flat-bottomed boat. It could be that they ventured farther down the river into Madison County (County seat Huntsville, Ala.) as the Tennessee River runs right through the County. Nevertheless there are several documents to prove that Frank was born in Alabama. No doubt Frank moved with his family as a young boy back to Tennessee on Walden's Ridge in what was then Bledsoe County in the vicinity of the Lewis Chapel and Flat Top communities. There he grew up and married Nancy Hughes in the late 1830's. Nancy was born around 1822 in Kentucky, the daughter of Hezikiah and Elizabeth Hughes, some of the earliest settlers of a well-known Soddy family. Frank and Nancy lived in Bledsoe County during their early married life near his father and brothers around the Lewis Chapel-Flat Top area. Frank farmed and was also shown as being a wagonmaker in the 1850 Bledsoe County census, an occupation that was also shown to be his brother Wash Coleman's at one time. It could have been possible that they worked together, although this is mere speculation. Somewhere in the 1850's Frank and Nancy moved off of Walden's Ridge and into the valley at Bakewell, TN, (then known as Retro). There is an entry in the Hamilton County deed book where Charles Coleman deeded 50 acres to Benjamin E. Coleman in the 12th District of Hamilton County. This is undoubtedly some of the 640 acres Frank's father purchased in 1831. Even though the entry in the deed book is dated 12/26/1859, I believe Frank and his family moved to Bakewell a few years earlier. Frank's wife, Nancy died 9/2/1859. Her cause of death is unknown but she was just in her mid-to-late 30's. Nancy was buried in what was then called the Hughes Cemetery in Bakewell. It is now known as the Bakewell Cemetery and is located on Retro-Hughes Road close the the railroad tracks in Bakewell. Frank remarried early the following year. He married Mary Jones, the daughter of D. S. Jones of Bakewell. Mary was born ca. 1821 in Tennessee. They were married just a year when the Civil War broke out, and a year after that Frank became a Union soldier. Frank joined the Union army on 2/10/1862 at Flat Lick, Kentucky, for a period of 3 years. He was mustered into H Company of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry under the command of Gen. J. G. Spears. He spent the first several months encamped at Portland, Ohio on the Ohio River. In August 1862 his company marched toward the Cumberland Gap in Northern Tennessee. This is where Frank saw his first action on 9/8/1862 where he and his company participated in the battle of Pine Mountain, Tennessee. After the battle of Pine Mountain, Frank's company evacuated the Cumberland Gap and started marching towards Flat Lick, Kentucky, eventual destination being Portland, Ohio. While on this march Frank dropped out due to illness and was subsequently captured by Confederate forces on 9/22/1862. He was returned to his company through a prisoner exchange on 2/23/1863. The company was at Murfreesboro, Tennessee when he rejoined them. They then marched through Liberty Pike and on to Carthage, Tennessee. While in the Carthage area, his company did some picketing, foraging, scouting and escorted a P.O.W. train back to Murfreesboro. Frank and his company remained in Carthage until September of 1863. They then broke camp and marched toward Alexandria, Tennessee, on to Liberty, McMinnville, Beersheba Springs, Jasper, Battle Creek and into Chattanooga, TN, arriving 9/20/1863. On 9/23/1863 they engaged the enemy on Lookout Mountain repulsing 3 attacks by Confederate Forces of superior number. On 9/30/1863, they evacuated Chattanooga and marched toward Sale Creek, Tennessee, arriving 10/3/1863. They remained camped at Sale Creek for the remainder of the month. Being close to home, Frank was able to secure a leave of absence from the Army for several months duration. An entry in his service record reads as follows: "Detached service safeguard at Sale Creek, TN. Nov. 1, 1863." While on leave Frank was elected Constable of the 12th District of Hamilton County, TN. He was elected 3/5/1864, and sworn in 4/5/1864. It was a post he would retain only a short time as he rejoined the 3rd Infantry in June of 1864. By then his outfit was camped near Atlanta, GA, where he rejoined them. They remained near Atlanta until September when they marched through Jonesboro and Lovejoy, GA, then headed back North through Decatur, Kingston, Rome and then to Calhoun, GA. This took them into late October 1864. At Calhoun they rode a train back into Tennessee and marched to Nashville. Frank was transferred from Nashville to an Army hospital in Jeffersonville, Ind., and admitted on 11/30/1864, for Chronic Rheumatism. Upon returning to Nashville, Frank's company fought an engagement near Nashville on 12/15 & 12/16/1864, in which 3 men were killed and 8 wounded from his company. Frank remained around Nashville for the remaining two months of his tour of duty and was mustered out of service at Nashville, TN, on 2/23/1865, due to expiration of term of service. Frank returned home to Bakewell and resumed his farming duties. On 6/19/1867, he put in a claim with the U. S. Government for an invalid pension. He stated the reason for request for pension as follows: When I went into the Army I was a sound man, but was exposed very much and after the Missionary Ridge fight we made a very rapid and hard march to Rocky Creek, 26 miles north of Chattanooga on the north side of the river and the streams were swollen and the woods full of water and I was wet all day and all night. (It rained very hard all the time.) Then took a pain in my ankle which continued for nearly a year and then moved to my knee where it seems to be permanently settled. I suppose it to be Rhuematism and it was brought about by my exposure as aforesaid. I now have to walk with a cane " The document was witnessed by A. A. Pearson and John Anderson. [Cy has] other documents from the Dept. of the Interior's Pension office and from the Adjutant General's office concerning Frank's request for pension, but no record of a final disposition in the matter so it is not known if he actually received a pension or not. Frank's second wife, Mary died 9/22/1872, around the age of 50 years, in Bakewell. Cy did not know where she was buried. Frank married for a third time on 2/29/1874, when he married Martha Gross in Hamilton County, TN. Martha was born 8/?/1847, in Tennessee. (Probably in Bakewell.) Frank was 56 years old when they were married and 29 years her senior. Frank and Martha remained in Bakewell the rest of their lives with Frank continuing to farm as best he could. In the 1880 census, Frank was listed as being "maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled", so apparently his health was really beginning to fail by then, although he continued to father children almost to his death as his last child was born just 4 months before his death. Frank died at his home in Bakewell on 1/16/1883, at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 23 days. He was buried in the Hughes (Bakewell) Cemetery on Retro-Hughes Road in Bakewell. On 2/10/1883, Martha filed for a pension for surviving widows of Civil War Veterans. She was awarded the pension and received it for the rest of her life. Martha being only 35 years old when Frank died never remarried and lived on for another 56 years. She died 5/3/1939, in Bakewell at the age of 91. She was buried in the Ware Cemetery in Bakewell. Box 530 Ingram, TX 78025 United States 830-367-5871 Fax: 830-367-5427 mhughes@@brokenarrowranch.com John Hughes (son of Francis (G4) Hughes and Rebecca Allen?) was born 1779, and died March 15, 1871 in ,Hamilton, Tennessee. He married Jane Skiles, daughter of William Skiles. Includes Notes for John Hughes: John Wilson, a genealogical writer for the Chattanooga News Free Press wrote in an article on April 2, 1995: A Hamilton County lawsuit in 1880 tells of the objections that Francis Hughes had to his son's relations with Jane Skiles. They had two sons, Hezekiah and Francis (Frank), and were still unmarried. John Hughes left Greene County to head west, but he halted and wrote a letter to Jane Skiles, saying that despite his father's objections he would marry her if she would come to him. She did so and they were married on the Middle Cumberland at the home of a man named Hoover. They returned to Greene County, then pushed on to Hamilton County. From a letter sent to Margie Shields by David Gray: "Old John Hughes and wife Elizabeth Skiles were married about 1800 at the Ford or Fork of Cumberland River at home of an Esq Whover (perhaps Hoover?). This is from depositions taken after death of John Hughes in about 1876 in attempts to settle his estate. He died intestate. One deposition said that 2 children (Hezakiah and Francis) were born to Jane Skiles before her marriage to John, but that he was the father of both and that old Francis objected to his marriage as he was only 19. Now further the depositions said that after birth of 2nd child he sent back to Greeneville for her and she joined him at Ford or Fork of Cumberland where they were married by Esq Whover (it is always spelled so). So this probably places Francis Hughes and Margaret, too, in KY for many years - but Francis Hughes you will recall was in Burke Co. NC in 1776 and then on Watauga about 1780 - then in 1832 or thereabouts he was in Greene Co. where he filed for a pension. If all this is correct then he left Shenandoah and was in Burke Co. by 1776" Note that John was about 15 years old when his father bought 252 acres of land from Martin Click (1794 - Greene Co. minutes). John's son, Hezakiah, later marries Elizabeth Click, daughter of Martin Click. In Deed Book 9, page 452, Francis Hughes (et al) sells to John Hughes (his son) and James Allen (John's son-in-law) 178 acres of land on the South Side of Nolichucky River. John Hughes, Sr. spent his last days with his daughter, Nancy Hughes Hixson. He had earlier transferred to Nancy the girl slave Dol. John Hughes, Sr. was 90 when he died in 1871. His wife, Jane, had died many years earlier. Tuesday, 28 July, 1812 Bill of Sale from Francis Hughes to John Hughes, dated 3 June 1812 for a negro woman named Aggy and 4 small children. From "Passports of Southeastern Pioneers, 1770-1823" Cherokee Indian Agency Passports: "John Hughs has permission to descend the Tennessee River with a Keelbottomed Boat laden with whiskey, Brandy & Cider Royal on his passage to Pancore on the West side of the Mississippi" I have no idea whether or not this applies to this John Hughs. HAMILTON COUNTY PIONEERS by John Wilson, BookCrafters, Chelsea, Michigan, First Edition c1998. Article on HUGHES family, pages 131-134 page: 133 Elizabeth CLICK, Mary Ann CLICK 5th paragraph quoted: "Hezekiah and Francis HUGHES, the oldest sons of John HUGHES, Sr., lived at Bledsoe County, though Hezekiah HUGHES moved to Hamilton County after the Civil War. Francis HUGHES married Temperance LASSETER, and they had no children. His lands were deeded to his slaves and held by them until their death. It was said that Hezekiah HUGHES, who was Iame, 'fooled away' his Bledsoe farm. Hezekiah HUGHES married Elizabeth CLICK. Her widowed mother, Mary Ann CLICK, lived with the HUGHES family for many years. She is said to have lived to be 105. In Hamilton county, Hezekiah HUGHES occupied several hundred areas between Opossum and Rock creeks. He cleared a portion for fields and also made whisky, according to later descendants. The children of Hezekiah HUGHES and Elizabeth CLICK included Nancy who married Benjamin Franklin "Frank" COLEMAN, Eliza, Rachel who married Tom DAVIS and then Byrd McWILLIAMS, Mary Ann who married Lewis VARNER, John McKinney, Francis, Rebecca who married Henry BOWMAN, and William. Eliza HUGHES eloped with a CORDELL. McKinney and Francis married DUFF sisters. McKinney married Adaline DUFF and Francis married Margaret DUFF." http://www.interment.net/data/us/tn/bledsoe/bowman/bowman.htm Take hwy 111 north from Soddy Daisy, TN toward Dunlap, TN. Near this spot in the Henry Bowman Cemetery lie the remains of pioneer settlers Hezekiah Hughes & his wife Elizabeth Click. As farmers they worked this land which served as a family orchard. When their young daughter died from a bee sting, they sought the most beautiful spot on their property for her final resting place. Accordingly this blossom covered ground became the family cemetery. It was dedicated by family May 26, 1997. A monument is in the cemetery about this. There are many markers without names in this cemetery. http://www.familyorigins.com/users/s/k/i/Sunnie-L-Skiles/FAMO1-0001/d36.htm#P393 Henry Reynolds Senr. Decd. Monday 26 Jan. 1835 Mins. 18. http://www.hctgs.org/newspaper/francis_hughes_101.htm submitted by: Connie Lisenby <C_LISENBY at aol dot com> FRANCIS HUGHES, 101-YEAR-OLD VOTER OF FLAT TOP PRECINCT Has Lived in Same Community on Ridge All His Life and One House for Seventy-five Years That man is of few years and full of sorrow is not the opinion of Francis Hughes, centenarian, of Flat Top precinct, in Hamilton county, who not only has the distinction of being the oldest voter, but, as far as known, the oldest native resident of this section, he having lived in the same community for 101 years and spent seventy-five years of that time in one house. Flat Top is located on Walden’s ridge, eight miles from Soddy, and can only be reached by wagon or muleback. The voting precinct was established a few months ago and Mr. Hughes was among the first to place his name on the registration book. They are all republicans and boast that there isn’t a democrat in the precinct. It is the little hamlet where Mr. Hughes has spent the greater portion of his long life in an isolated community cut off from the march of progress and civilization, both on account of its inaccessibility and because of the wishes of the few inhabitants, who prefer solitude to the busy marts of life. The family of Mr. Hughes and his few neighbors live in almost feudal manner. The scenery and contour of the country reminds the visitor who accidentally happens on the unique settlement, of Exmoor of the wild and rugged country vividly described in “Lorna Doone.” The hurrying rush of the world seems far removed and it is with wonder the visitor hears Mr. Hughes expound his views with regard to America’s attitude toward France in the recent debt controversy. The centenarian believes the United States would do well to remember the manner in which France, through Lafayette, helped this country in its time of need, and advocates that leniency temper all decisions concerning the disagreement with regard to money obligations between the two nations. Still Operating Blacksmith Shop. Mr. Hughes was born within three miles of Flat Top on the Henry Bowman place. “My old friends are all dead, and all my playmates anything like my age are gone, but I don’t ever want to die.” He went over into Bledsoe county on March 7, 1851, to get his wife, who was Miss Margaret Duff, and brought her back to the house he had built for her, now called the “old home place.” Recently Mr. Hughes left this home, where his fourteen children were born, nine girls and five boys, and took up residence with a son, Richard Hughes. Centenarian Never Used Tobacco, but Did Take Liquor in Coffee When Brand Was Good –Operates Blacksmith Shop, Chops Wood and Rides Horse Every Day. Each day, however, finds Mr. Hughes astride his horse, riding over to his old home and to his blacksmith shop, where he maintains an active business. Time is not measured by months and years by the centenarian, but by the size of a tree, for he told a Times representative who called on him recently: “I have lived here long enough to plant this spruce and see it grown until it is now three feet thick.” When Mr. Hughes was questioned regarding the reason for his long life, his humorous view of the world was demonstrated, as he said: “Well, it might be plenty of meal bread and potatoes, and on the other hand it might be the whisky I used to drink for breakfast,” and with a twinkle in his eye he deplored the present state of affairs, declaring only amateurs are making liquor now, and “it’s not Christian to drink it”. Fella gave me a pint of the stuff a short time ago, and I brought it home,” said Mr. Hughes, “and in a few days it turned as white as milk.” Tobacco is described by Mr. Hughes as a vile weed, and he declares he will not use it in any form. “Took a chaw of tobaccer once,” he said, “and it made me sick. Ain’t never had any use for it, and won’t tolerate ground to grow it.” Mr. Hughes declares he has never been sick in his life – “that is not to say sick, had a cold once or twice,” he explained. “I’d live on and on if the Good Master would let me,” he said. Graphically Describes Civil War Experiences. Civil war experience are graphically described by Mr. Hughes, who says he never fought on either side, but his family were “Yankees,” and he characterizes the Confederate soldiers as “rebels,” declaring they tried to hang his father and raided their barns and fields for food and fodder. Whenever the Confederate army approached, members of the Hughes family would take the wagons into the various hollows near Flat Top and either hide under the vehicles or in them until the raiding party moved on. Several of the brothers of Frank Hughes fought in the army and one was confined in the Andersonville prison for a long period and later died there. Flat Top Section Home of Wild Life When Hughes Was Young and Indians Often Visited Community Large number of wild animals, such as bear, deer, turkey and wolves, inhabited the country around Flat Top when Mr. Hughes was a child and a young man. Cherokee Indians from Georgia frequently came to that section of the country to hunt and to trade with the settlers before they were taken to the reservation west of the Mississippi river. The Indians from Georgia had one bad habit which made the obnoxious to the inhabitants of Flat Top. Whenever they killed a deer they stripped the hide from the animal and left the carcass, taking only such meat as the hunters wished to eat at that time. Enormous rattlesnakes of great age infested the country around Flat Top when Mr. Hughes was a youngster. He stated he had killed tow of these snakes, each measuring five feet, but most of them were about six inches long. May copperheads were also found and killed. Now that owners of expensive automobiles brag about diving to Nashville from Chattanooga in four house and certain number of minutes, the announcement that the trip to the capital from Flat Top required twelve days when Mr. Hughes was a boy is received with almost incredulous silence. The journey was considered an exciting adventure in those days and was made only at long intervals, or when illness or death made the perilous undertaking necessary. Commenting on the change in conditions after the Civil war, Mr. Hughes seemed to think the women folds had the hardest time. Prior to the war the women could do nothing for themselves when they went to town. A negro had to carry them to the buggy, put them in it, drive them to their destination, carry their bundles from the different stores to the buggy and bring them safely home again. However, after the conflict the women had to walk to town, and assist in carrying home such articles as the men could not hold in their arms. Mr. Hughes is the father of fourteen children, all of whom are dead except four girls and two boys; he has thirty-two grandchildren, eighty-five great grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Hughes is not a church man. When his father and mother first settled in that section of the country it was entirely isolated from all forms of civilization, churches, being unheard of, therefore he never entered into its fellowship. All of his children, he stated, had embraced the Methodist faith. Customs Hark Back to Revolutionary Days. The conditions prevailing throughout the country during the Revolutionary days maintain in large measure on Flat Top. From the wool of sheep raised on the farms thread is carded and spun and then knitted into stocking and sweaters, which are proudly displayed by various members of the family. The old distaff and spinning wheel used by Margaret Duff Hughes when she made the clothes for her firstborn, about three-quarters of a century ago, are still in use by some of her daughters, although the entire family is not dressed in homespun today, as is the case when she came a bride to Flat Top. Mr. Hughes’ one hobby is horses. In all his long and active life he has never permitted a day to pass without taking a horseback ride. His energy would put many a younger man to shame, for in addition to managing his blacksmith shop, he splits enough wood to supply the family of his son, with whom he now resides. Several members of his family have lived to more than ripe old age, Mr. Hughes stated. His grandmother died at the age of 105 and one sister lived to be 110. He expressed the hope he would live many more years on Flat Top, where it is peaceful and quiet. Only once during his long life has the seclusion of his home been threatened. About seventeen years ago a company from Pennsylvania came to the mountain to cut timber. They put up a sawmill, brought a gang of woodsmen and started to work. In order to provide living quarters for the workmen a large number of wooden shacks were erected, the ruins of which are still standing. Demonstrating the fact that nothing changes in the little community the section where the wood cutting operations took place is designed (sic) as “out at Pennsylvania.” When a Times staff photographer arrived at Flat Top it was evident the invisible messengers of the mountains had traveled ahead and warm welcome was waiting for the visitors. A bountiful dinner had been prepared and the stranger was invited to partake of the meal before any question was permitted as to the business which brought the guest to the remote district. While Mr. Hughes did not seem to have a philosophy of life other than to live clean and at peace with his neighbors, it is to his credit that he raised a large family of law-abiding citizens who have never, insofar as can be ascertained, brought dishonor upon the name he bears. Mr. Hughes declared he had never been drunk in his life, never used tobacco in any form and ate only healthy food. He also is a great believer in staying out doors as much as possible and takes plenty of exercise through hard work. Rebecca and Henry lived with her parents in the big log house until both parents died. In later years, they built a frame house on the Limestone Bluff closer to the spring. They farmed the large tract of land which was given to her by her father, and also operated a gristmill and sawmill on the creek nearby. They raised cattle and horses for sale and sheep for wool, and to sell. During the civil War, the sheep were driven under a very large bluff which later became known as the "sheep rock". Henry Bowman enlisted during the Civil War in Co., D, 6th TN Volunteer Mounted Infantry on Oct. 24, 1864, under the command of Capt. Daniel McWilliams. He was discharged June, 1865. Research of Carolyn Whitaker <attsissie at aol dot com> http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=carolynwhitaker&id=I3776 She has done extensive research on the Hezekiah Hughes Family and many of the census records I have reviewed were because of her research. He died Jan.15, 1915, at the age of 85, as the result of a fall on ice on the large limestone rock covering the lawn in front of his home. He was tall of stature, with olive complexion, dark eyes and black hair. Rebecca was a small of stature with dark eyes and black hair. She died June 1918 at age 83. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nansemondcolemans/hambenfrank.htm#C413 Descendants of Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia 1684-1930 by Wes Coleman Updated: Jun 10, 2008. By permission, the text below is excerpts from a book, The Colemans of North Hamilton County Tennessee by Cy Yarborough. Editor's notes are my additions based on reports people have given me or I have researched - Wes Coleman *Benjamin Franklin Coleman IV was the illegitimate son of Frank's oldest son Benjamin Carroll Coleman. The mother was Martha Gross whom Frank later married and he raised the boy as his own son and as a brother to Amos, Bill, Alma and Maggie even though he was actually his grandson. The boy was also called Frank and will be listed as Benjamin Franklin Coleman's son throughout the remainder of this manuscript for the sake of clarity.
