William was born in 1159 in Dunster, Somersetshire, England.1 William's father was Baron William de Mohun and his mother was Godehaut de Toeni. His maternal grandparents were Lord Roger de Toeni III and Ida de Hainault. He had a sister named Yolande. He was the older of the two children. He had a half-sister named Isabel.
