William was born in 1165 in la Ferte-Mace, Orne, Normandie.1   William's father was Seigneur Matthew de la Ferte and his mother was Gunreda Paynel.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 51 in 1216 in Holsworthy, Devon, England.1
