Joane was born in 1180 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England.1 Joane's father was 4th Earl of Hertford, 6th Earl of Clare Richard (The Surety) De Clare and her mother was Countess of Gloucester Amica Meullent Of Gloucester. Her paternal grandparents were 2nd Earl of Hertford Roger (The Good) de Clare and Maud de St. Hilaire; her maternal grandparents were Earl of Gloucester William FitzRobert de Caen and Hawise de Beaumont. She had two brothers and two sisters, named The Surety, Richard, Aveline and Matilda. She was the second youngest of the five children.-
