His paternal grandparents were William de Braose IV and Matilda de Clare; his maternal grandparents were Llewelyn (The Great) ap Iorweth and Joan Plantagenet. He had three brothers named William, Llywelyn and Richard. He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Maud.-
