Martyn was born in 1486 in Harsley Castle, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England. Martyn's father was James Strangeways and his mother was Anne Conyers. His paternal grandparents were Sir James Strangeways and Elizabeth D'Arcy; his maternal grandparents were Sir John Conyers and Margaret D'Arcy. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named James, Lawrence, Leonard, John, Thomas, Nicholas, Richard, Katherine, Cecily, Elizabeth, Margery and Joan. He was the youngest of the thirteen children.-
