Edward's father was Alfred Staten and his mother was Malvina McAlister. His paternal grandparents were William Staten and Matilda Brent. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Daley, Eddie, Maggie, Dora, Maud and Shelly. He was the second oldest of the seven children.
