John I was born about 1538 in Ellanbane, Isle Man, Lancashire, England. John I's father was Hunan I Standish and his mother was Female (Standish). His paternal grandparents were Robert Standish and Margaret Croft. He had two brothers named Hunan II and Gilbert. He was the second oldest of the three children.
