DEPOSITION ________
Case of Sarah Shipley , No. 379.798
On this 19th day of Mch. , 1890 , at
7 mi. W. of Chester , County of Crawford ,
State of Arkansas , before me, H. N. Patton , a
Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Mrs. Susan
Crabtree , who, being by me first duly sworn to answer
truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this Special Examination of
aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says: I count my age 48 years old as
nigh as I know: housewife : P.O address Hale
Crawford Co. Ark.
The Claimant in this case is my mother. I am the
3rd child. I do not know my mothers age but she
must be somewhere in 80. For several years now
she has been quite feeble - been so that she could get
about, until along sometime this last fall she has been
confined to her own house.
My fathers name was Benjamin Shipley. By
him mother had eleven children. We have no family
record to show the date of mothers marriage to my father,
and the ages of the children. We all had our ages
set down in a family Bible, but it got destroyed since
we came to Arkansas. It just got torn up by the
connection using it and handling it about.
My youngest brother, Elijah Shipley, was 4
years old when father and mother separated. I don't
know Elijah's age. I have been married 32 or 33
years and it was before I was married that my
father left. Thomas was the youngest child and died
2 or 3 wks after he was born. He was born 2 or 3
years after father left. Father has been dead about
6 years. Brother Dick, Jim, + Elijah about were left to
the care of my mother when father left. They were
little bits of "fellers." The balance of the children were
married. My brother Dick was a strong Union boy and
the rebs captured him and hung him. They had him

in the Southern army and he deserted them and
was trying to get through to the Union forces and they came
in on him. That left James + "Lige" at home with mother.
When James got big enough he went into the federal
army. He was 16 or 17 years old I reckon. He got so
large that he had to go to the army to keep out of the way of
the rebels. That left Elijah at home a little bit of a
fellow, not large enough to be of any help to his mother
in supporting her.
James enlisted in the 1st Ark Inf. But I don't
remember the Co. Capt. Parker's Co. I think. I don't
remember the year James died but it wasn't more than
4 or 5 years after he came out of the army, if it was that
long. I can't tell you the cause of his death unless
it was that that came from his arm. He was vaccinnated
at Fort Smith Ark. but I can't give the year when it was done,
but it was while he was in the service. I was not present
when he was vaccinnated. I went to Ft Smith to see him
and my other brother Park Shipley; both had been vaccinnated
and I saw their arms. Park Shipley died before James
did and from the same disease - vaccinnation. There
were no cases of smallpox at Ft Smith - at that time that
I know of. Both brothers seemed to be affected alike.
When I saw James at Ft Smith he had been
vaccinnated in the left arm between the elbow
and the wrist, on one of them big leaders. It was swelled
considerably and was as raw as it could be. I noticed
no other sores on him at that time - either on his face
or other wise. Park was vaccinated in the same place
and his arm was also very sore. It was at this time
that I learned that the sores on my brothers' arms were
her
