John's father was Samuel S. Sands and his mother was Cinderalla Jane Cunningham.  His paternal grandparents were James Sands and Jane Jones. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James, Robert, James, William, Samuel, Artemitia, Nancy, Martha and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
