13th Laird of Ruthven Patrick was born about 1520 in Ruthven Castle, Perthshire, Scotland. 13th Laird of Ruthven Patrick's father was 12th Laird of Ruthven William Ruthven and his mother was Janet Halyburton. Patrick Ruthven, 3rd Lord Ruthven (c. 1520 - 1566), played an important part in the political intrigues of the 16th century as a strong Protestant and a supporter of the lords of the congregation. He favored the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots with Darnley, and was the leader of the band which murdered Rizzio. This event was followed by his flight into England, where he died on the June 13, 1566. Ruthven wrote a testimony of the murder for Queen Elizabeth, which is kept by the British Museum.
