Daniel Ruffin was born on January 30th, 1924 in Roxboro, Person Co, NC. Daniel Ruffin's father was Daniel Ruffin Rhew and his mother was Edith Lyndell Clayton. His paternal grandparents were James Simpson Rhew and Frances 'France' Taylor Clayton. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James Stedman, John, Infant Son, Fannie Leen, Edith Winsom and Dora Montane.
