Drury was born in 1798.  Drury's father was Jesse Hix and his mother was Jane Ferrell.  His paternal grandparents were William Hix and Elizabeth Holloway; his maternal grandparents were William Ferrell and Martha. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Martha, Elizabeth and Hannah. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named William, Leftwich, Henderson, David and Emily.
