Richard A. was born in 1847 in Orange Co, NC and his baptism took place in Census 1870.1 Richard A.'s father was Alvin D. Hailey and his mother was Martha C. Roberts. His maternal grandparents were Willis B. Roberts and Nancy Marcom. He had a brother and seven sisters, named William T., Louisa J., Cassandra S., Mary W., Nancy Caroline, Minerva Helen 'Minnie', Lucy H. and Rachel P..
