Ioannis was born in 1012 in Constantinople, Byzantine Empire.1   Ioannis' father was Andronikos Dukas and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were Gregoras Dukas and <Unknown>. He had a brother named Konstantinos.  He was the younger of the two children.  He died at the age of 76 in 1088.1
