Joseph Thomas was born in 1855. Joseph Thomas' father was Joseph Despain and his mother was Sarah Ann Morrison. His paternal grandparents were John B. Despain and Malinda A. Bazor. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named William Henry, Marshall, James, Henry, Lewis, George W., Robert, Elizabeth and Malinda A.. He was the second oldest of the ten children.
