Robert was born in 1148 in Wheldrake, Yorkshire, England.1   Robert's father was Thomas Darel and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were Geoffrey Darrel and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and a sister, named Geoffrey, Marmaduke, Ralph and Alia.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
