Vergie was born in 1890 in Kentucky.¹ Vergie's father was Winston H Collins and her mother was Mary Alice Foster. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Crittenden Foster and Lucinda Thomas Anderson. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Stanley, Harry C, Earl, Hubert, Dora, Elizabeth, Catherine and Marguerite.
